Projet ANR
ANR 2014 project
Amongst all the recent innovations that cloud computing has delivered so far, Software Defined Networking (SDN) represents a disruptive change in the way we architect, build, and operate networks. It opens up traditionally closed, single-vendor networks and brings competition and innovation on some historically unsolvable networking problems. SDN is a new promising networking paradigm where network control is decoupled from forwarding and is directly programmable. This migration of control, formerly tightly bound in individual network devices, into accessible computing devices enables the underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services, which can treat the network as a logical or virtual entity. SDN thus enables automatic and flexible network resources management. In addition, the cloud computing paradigm allows telecom operators to virtualize their network appliances (e.g., firewall, proxies...) with the opportunity to deploy them on commodity hardware and to manage them like any other virtual machine. This approach is commonly referred to as Network Function Virtualization (NFV). SDN technologies leverage NFV to make the network programmable via its softwarization (e.g., with open vSwitch) which enables to dynamically manage network functions. These complementary network paradigms bring new essential questions: how to manage disruptions in SDN and NFV architectures? How to scale up and increase robustness of the SDN control plane? How to dynamically allocate physical resources for network and service performance? How to place and interconnect virtualized network functions? The project REFLEXION (REsilient and FLEXible Infrastructure for Open Networking) is an industrial research project that will work throughout experimentations and application use cases on the next generation of Software-Defined Networking solutions for large and critical distributed systems. The project will study the robustness and scalability of the current SDN architectures and the flexibility leveraged by SDN for provisioning resources and virtualized network functions (VNF).
