WINDS

Programme de recherche international

WINDS is an international research project between UPMC and UFMG (Brazil), that proposes to investigate the communication technologies pertaining cloud applications being accessed by mobile clients. Those clients are either classic devices such as tablets, smartphones and mobile computers, or things (embedded systems with networking capabilities). Cloud computing is one of the most successful paradigms for networked applications today, being applied for services such as traffic monitoring (the famous Waze application) to personal interaction in social networks up to productivity applications such as collaborative document and spreadsheet creation. This project is going to actuate on all levels of the communication network, investigating architectures, protocols and algorithms that will increase the robustness, performance and management of such a network. The following research activities are going to be carried out during the project: - We will develop mechanisms for offloading computation from mobile devices to clouds. - We will evaluate distributed cloud architectures, with cloudlets closer to clients to provide better performance. - We will develop monitoring system to identify performance problems on the cloud infrastructure, in the backhaul from wireless infrastructure to the Internet, and on wireless links. - We will develop new data dissemination protocols for wireless links (for fast local data transfers) and distributed clouds (for synchronization and migration in case of handovers)
