A MAN (Metropolitan
area network) is typically a backbone network that spans a
metropolitan area. A new era of computer networking is emerging with
new MAN technologies that use fiber networks, MPLS, GMPLS, Ethernet
LAN networks across the MAN. Most important are the services being
offered by carriers that compete with the incumbent phone companies.
The new networks are also extremely flexible. In some cases,
customers can access the application providers using SLAs. Mobility
and security are also two important criteria for choosing a MAN
architecture. To further encourage research in this area, the theme
of this conference is: Networking for MANs.
